South Africa: SA-SIG Newsletter now online.

The June 2008 issue of the SA-SIG Newsletter is now online here; earlier issues are also available. The issue includes the following: - The South African Friends of Beth Hatefutsoth have been documenting early Jewish life in the country communities of South Africa. Three volumes of "Jewish Life in the South African Country Communities" have already been published with another two in the pipeline. A chapter about Wolseley (Vol. 2) is presented, as well as an index of Vol. 3 and an order form for additional volumes. - The South African Jewish Genealogy Society (Johannesburg) has offered outstanding programs. Chair Maurice Skikne and program chair Ada Gamsu provide a list of the lectures, 2005-2008. These may provide programming ideas for other JGSs - Ivor Kosowitz (ex-Cape Town and now Perth, Australia) offers his memories of growing up in South Africa, 1950s-60s. - Sandra Cassel writes a eulogy about her late father - Leslie Jacobson - who spent his life farming in the small community of Philippolis, Orange Free State. - Muizenberg Revisited: Joy Kropman from The Revisiting Muizenberg Team is still looking for information for a forthcoming exhibition. She particularly would appreciate information on accommodation, hotels and the synagogue. Information on how to contact the team is provided. Learn more about the SA-SIG Newsletter here.

My grandfather, Jacob Rosenblum, came from Vilki(ja), Kaunas (Kovna), Lithuania around 1880. I visited his father, Osher's grave there in 2004. I received this from a cousin, Andrew Myers. Andy mentions a family member who was thought to have gone to South Africa.) Is there any hope of tracing any of this?

Hi Marty. This Chaim Labe Guldman part of the tree is a little confusing. It seems to just end. The tree I have says that Chaim Labe had three children David, Rafel and it says Rachel moved to South Africa. In a letter that Norman Bazell wrote to the family in the 1980's he said that Chaim Labe was the brother of Osher and Yankel. Norman Bazell passed away in 2006 I think.
I also noticed that Yankel brother of Osher had 4 children.Ethel,Isaac who married a Cohen,Nottle and Yoshe who drowned. Then it says Yoshe's children were Louis who married a Gross,Ike and Rachel married a Rosenblum who was unrelated from england. Then Rachel had Frances who married a Goldstein,Helen,David and Jacob. I think Frances Goldstein lived in Sharon Pennsylvania and had a daughter named Myra.
I have been e-mailing with Marv Epstein who is the brother of Louis Epstein.Louis Epstein ran the Golden Dawn market until 1982 in Sharon/Farrell He took over for his Father in Law, Nathan Rosenblum.Max is a retired cardiologist and lives in Walnut Creek California. He keeps in touch with my Great Aunt Lucille. He knew all of my great Aunts. He also said that they used to come to Cleveland in the 1930's and would visit Morris Kamenetsky at his hardware store. He also said that my great grandmother Ida introduced his mother Bessie (Rosenblum) to their father who is an Epstein. Louis still lives in Sharon Pennsylvania.

    Andrew
