Readers in the Greater Washington DC area should try to attend this event co-hosted by the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Washington and the Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington on Sunday, November 11.
The groups will host archivist Wendy Turman in "Preserving Your Family's or Synagogue's History: Tips on safeguarding family treasures."
The meeting begins at 1.45pm at the Historic Adas Israel synagogue in Washington, DC. Click here for address, directions and more.
Turman will speak about ways to preserve and care for family history materials such as photographs, scrapbooks, old letters and documents, highlighting some of the current preservation issues in the Society's collections. She will also provide an overview of the Society's archival collections and their use in genealogical research.
She holds an advanced degree in museum studies and has been the archivist/curator of the Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington for seven years. She manages the archival, photographic and object collections and is responsible for preservation as well as accession and loan documentation, archival processing and cataloging. Her previous museum positions include working with the National Museum of Health and Medicine, the Smithsonian Institution's America's Smithsonian Exhibit, and National Museum of American History.
There is an optional tour of an award-winning exhibit - "Jewish Washington: Scrapbook of an American Community" - from 3-3.45pm at the nearby 6th & I Historic Synagogue. Tour space is limited; reservations suggested. See the JGSGW website for more information.
The group also provided an interesting article from the Library of Congress on protecting family treasures, with many good tips. To read it, click here.
