Los Angeles: Looking for a little Yiddish?

There's a lot of Yiddish going on now in Los Angeles. Take a chance and reconnect with your Ashkenazi ancestors' mameloshen.

Nu, so who's offering it?

Workmen's Circle has beginning, intermediate and advanced classes running for 18 weeks each on Mondays, from Setpember 10. Members' prices are some $60-100 lower for each class, and beginner classes are $225 for non-members. Classes are at 1525 S. Robertson Boulevard, Los Angeles; the instructor is Reb Yakob Basner, and some scholarships are available. If you're not sure of what class, or if Yiddish is for you, take a free class on opening day.

American Jewish University (formerly University of Judaism) offers eight-session classes from October 9 or 10 on Tuesdays or Wednesdays: Intro I and Intro II with Miriam Koral; Intermediate and Advanced with Sheyndl Lieberman-Reich.

UCLA's 10-week classes (Tuesdays and Thursdays) begin September 27, during the day with Miriam Koral. Elementary classes are at 11 a.m., and Intermediate at 12.30 p.m. These are regular university classes, but others can enroll at UCLA Extension.

Although Santa Monica Emeritus College's Yiddish literature and Yiddish/Jewish Life classes began August 29 (and run through December 18), students may still be accepted. Classes are at 1.30 p.m. Wednesdays with Archie Barkan.
